3 Roulette Types You Need To Know

A traditional American Roulette wheel consists of 38 pockets. There is a zero and double-zero pocket, as well as pockets for the numbers 1 through 36.

This double-zero roulette wheel gives the house an edge of 5.26%.

The traditional European or French Roulette wheel has 37 pockets, one less than the American version. The only difference between an American and European roulette wheel is the number of zero pockets.

In the European variant, because there is only one zero pocket as opposed to two, the house edge is significantly lower at 2.7%. (I go into even more details regarding European and American Roulette later in this article.)

Prior to the advent of online casino games, players were limited in the number of roulette variants available to them. However, roulette underwent significant changes when casino games went digital.

Today, those who play online have access to a wide range of roulette variations. Of course, traditionalists still have access to their American and European versions as well.

Live Roulette Games

Live games, sometimes called live dealer or live casino roulette, have a real-life croupier and an actual roulette wheel.

You interact through a user interface on your screen and watch the live stream as it plays out.

The Live Dealer versions have some distinct features that can set them apart from a traditional RNG experience.

Face-to-Face Interaction:

With Live Dealer roulette, a real dealer spins a real wheel and engages in real-time conversation with the players.

This is very different from logging in and spending time playing an RNG variant by yourself.

Real Time Engagement

The technology behind live roulette involves streaming a real-time view of an actual spinning wheel. This allows players to watch and engage as they would at a brick-and-mortar casino.

The pace of play tends to be slightly slower with live dealer roulette, as players watch the ball spin inside the wheel until it comes to rest at the end of each spin.

With RNG roulette, the generator can select a random number far quicker than it takes an actual roulette ball to come to a rest inside the spinning wheel.

What Does Playthrough Mean With My Roulette Bonus?

Playthrough or playthrough requirements refer to the number of times a bettor must wager their bonus dollars before those bonus dollars become eligible to be withdrawn.

Securing a generous welcome bonus can significantly boost your bankroll, but it’s essential to thoroughly understand the bonus terms before accepting them.

Sifting through a site’s terms and conditions may not seem like an enjoyable task, but understanding the requirements that must be met before accessing your bonus funds is important.

Sometimes, the terms and conditions attached to bonus funds require a player to wager more than they are comfortable with or take them outside of their personal betting limits.

Example Welcome Bonus Terms

Let’s examine a real welcome bonus to help you remember which terms are super important to understand before signing up.

We’ll use BetMGM’s 100% Deposit Match up to $1,000 Bonus. Below are the most important terms relating to this bonus.

• Wagering Requirement: How many times you need to wager the bonus amount before withdrawing your winnings. In this bonus, it’s 15x.
• Game Eligibility/Weightings: Some games can’t be played when you have an active bonus. Other games sometimes don’t contribute 100% to the wagering requirement. In this example, roulette counts only 20%.
• Expiry: When you need to complete the wagering requirement by. For this bonus, it’s 14 days.
• Qualifying Deposit: The minimum amount you need to deposit to unlock the bonus here it’s $10.

With all of this in mind, if you took the full $1,000 bonus and spent it all on roulette, you’d need to wager (1000 x 15) x 5 = $75,000 in 14 days.

If roulette is your only game of choice, then wagering $75,000 over 14 days is a ridiculous total for most of us, and signing up for the full $1,000 deposit match does not make sense.

However, a $10 playthrough requirement requires a much more realistic betting total.

Players would have to average just over $50 a day in roulette bets over the course of a 2-week period.

It’s always worth considering your budget carefully when contemplating a welcome bonus that works best for you.

Roulette 101: Essential Tips for Beginners

Roulette is an easy game to understand, and you can practice here on Roulette Simulator. The goal is to correctly guess where the ball will land.

But, if you don’t have a great understanding of all your betting options, and the odds that they payout, it can feel more complicated than it really is.

Bets are divided into two categories: outside and inside.

Outside bets have smaller payouts but better odds (they’re more likely to happen).

Inside bets have larger payouts but smaller odds. Let’s take a look at the different types of bets, what they mean exactly, and what payout you can typically expect for each one.

Outside Bets

• Red/Black: Bet on the ball landing on either a red or black number. Payout: 1:1.
• Odd/Even: Wager on whether the number will be odd or even. Payout: 1:1.
• High/Low: Predict if the number will be between 1–18 (Low) or 19–36 (High). Payout: 1:1.
• Dozens: Bet on one of three 12-number groups (1–12, 13–24, 25–36). Payout: 2:1.

Inside Bets

Getting Started: Most Popular Roulette Variants to Play

I want to detail just the top three variants – European, American, and French – before we get into unique games.

I’ll walk you through how each one works and the rules that distinguish it from the others, including the RTP (return to player rate) which indicates the house edge.

European Roulette

European Roulette is probably the most commonly played version.

It has 37 pockets: numbers 1–36 and a single zero. The single zero gives it a slightly higher RTP (around 97.3%) compared to its American counterpart.

European Roulette’s straightforward rules and lower house edge make it the most popular option and very easy to find.

American Roulette

American Roulette adds an extra pocket, a double zero (00), bringing the total number of slots on the wheel to 38.

This extra zero square increases the house edge, lowering the RTP to approximately 94.7%.

That is a significant difference over time compared to European.

For me, American Roulette is the one to avoid. It has a much higher house edge for very little extra excitement.

However, most novice players don’t understand the differences between the variants and are unaware that they are at a disadvantage when playing American Roulette.

French Roulette

On looks alone, French Roulette looks the same as European Roulette. The wheel is identical, but there are a couple of special rules for even-money bets that we need to take a look at:

• La Partage: if the ball lands on zero then you get half of your bet back.
• En Prison: if the ball lands on zero then your wager gets moved onto the next spin.

These rules boost the RTP to an impressive 98.65%. If you’re a budget-conscious player, then the slight extra complication of these rules is well worth the boost in value.
